Perry is the child of Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry (actor). Her first television roles included two roles in the role of Jackie Harris (as seen in flashback) on her role on the ABC sitcom Roseanne as the character played by her mom. The actress did not go on to consider a career in acting until she reached the age of adulthood due to her parents being worried about the detrimental impact stress might have. Perry stated that she was shy to act during high school, but started doing shows in theater classes at Northwestern University as a way to make friends after transferring from Boston University. When she graduated, Perry went to New York to search for television work landing small roles on series such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent however, her homesickness led Perry back home to California which is where she discovered theater jobs. She performed on Broadway with her mother in The Other Place with her mother in the year 2013. She performed with the father of her character Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in the year 2015 at the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry was a part of nine episodes of ABC's show The Family. Perry was also featured in a role on ABC's political thriller Scandal along with her father. She played the role of an older Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off episode of CBS's The Big Bang Theory was an additional portrayal that was younger of her mother. She was cast in the role in an audition that was open despite being a fan of the character.
